Coach Standing

Chris Standing
Head BJJ Coach / Wrestling / Muay Thai / MMA

Coach Standing specializes in Mixed Martial Arts.  He has practiced martial arts since the age of 7 starting with wrestling.  At age 16 he began training in the discipline of Western Boxing.  He has also trained substantially in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and has had the privilege of regular training with the likes of Randy Couture, Dan Henderson, Evan Tanner, Ed Herman and Chris Leben.

Chris' own description of his area of expertise is, "I specialize in Mixed Martial Arts; Striking for MMA and Ground Fighting.  A style that has evolved to be known as "Thug-Jitsu" by some, I enjoy teaching a form of ground fighting that incorporates Jiu Jitsu with effecive striking techniques in close quarters combat."

Coach Standing has achieved many accomplishments over the years.  Among these are:

~  Cornered in excess of 400 MMA fights both locally and internationally

~  Trained, managed and cornered over 20 Champions since 2005

~  Collected over 20 title belts via students' victories in 2009-2010 alone

~  Nominated for the first ever NW Fight Scene magazine awards for "Coach

of the Year in Oregon 2010"

Coach Standing originally got into coaching to cover his gym dues at a local boxing gym he attended.  His coaching aptitude was quickly recognized and within two weeks he was put in charge of the MMA program.  A month later he had organized formal classes in Jiu Jitsu, MMA, Wrestling and Western Boxing, and within that year two fighters turned professional and several others were tearing up the fight scene in the northwest.  (Some of those fighters are now coaches here at 503 West Coast Jiu Jitsu.)

What Coach Standing likes best about coaching:  "The bonds that a coach forms with his athletes are some of the most rewarding reasons I teach.  As a coach, I measure my success by whether I've helped make an impact on someone's life in a positive way, by helping them win a fight, earn a belt or simply by getting fit while attending my classes."
